ESSAY (20% OF THE FINAL GRADE)

Extension. Maximum 10 pages for the essay’s body (unless you have been allowed to follow the 80-20 system, in which case the body’s essay shall be 20 pages). There will be voluntary oral presentations of the essays at the end of both theoretical and practical classes from 1 November 2023. Each presentation will last up to 10 minutes, and it will be followed by a 5-minute peer-review from another group of students and the teacher. Grades can differ between the authors of the same essay (based, for example, on the oral presentation).

Grading will be based on:

- Final course grade: final exam grade 40% and continuous assessment grade 60%

- The final exam will consist of theory questions (60%) and exercises (40%)

Continuous assessment: 60% of the final grade for the course

- Theory controls (partial exam) and exercises 40%

- Final work (optional in groups of a maximum of four students) 20%

- Active participation in class (presentation of the assay, debates, questions, etc.) bonus of up to 5%

Class Participation and Ethical Integrity: Attendance and participation in class are required. Repeated absences (more than three), lack of involvement, or inappropriate behaviour will prevent passing this subject. Plagiarism (on tests or assignments) or other forms of dishonest behaviour will mean failure in continuous evaluation.

UC3M students doing internships in a company or academic exchange (or similar situation) may choose, with prior authorization from their professor, for the 80-20 system: 80% exam grade plus 20% individual essay grade. The professor of the course must previously authorize the subject of this essay. Exchange students from other universities can’t opt for the 80-20 grading system.

The midterm exam is scheduled to take place in weeks 10 or 11, depending on how the group’s dates and days of class fall. Please check your Aula Global for the exact exam dates in each course.

If you read carefully the grading information of the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Jurídicas, you may notice that for students who choose not to follow the continuous evaluation in de "examen ordinario" (December or January), your grade in the exam should be 60% of the final COURSE grade (so you need a minimum of 8 over 10 to qualify). If you fail, you may retake your final exam in June, But in the "examen extraordinario" (the retake exam of June), you just need 5 points over 10 to qualify.

- The special earlier exam date is usually on December’s last day of class. Please check Aula Global for your course exams and the exact dates of the early exam for exchange students by appointment (or students of UC3M doing internships in other institutions, or under special authorization by the coordinator). If you choose this earlier exam, there are no more retake options.
